freelance Sr - Mid Level Flash Game Programmers

at Say Design, Inc. in Orange, California

Say Design, Inc., in business for 20 years, has been focussing on game innovation for the casual online games since 1999. Headquartered in Aliso Viejo, CA (South Orange County), Say Design coordinates a world-wide talent pool of resources with it’s core team of industry veterans.

We’re now looking for Mid-level to Sr. Flash Programmers (Contracting) at our Aliso Viejo office as well as Remotely. The ideal candidate will have had experience coding highly optimized game engines for 2D or 3D game-play, or have game samples that show it’s well within their capabilities. Alternately they will have extensive experience with multiplayer client to server development. On the best practices side, a strong understanding of object-oriented coding, excellent bug-fixing skills and techniques, and an efficient coding style. Good grasp of Flash art and animation optimization are also beneficial.

Ideally you have at least 3 years for mid level, and 5+ years experience for Sr. level roles. We also are looking for someone with strong experience with Client/Server programming leveraging such technologies as ElectroServer, SmartFox, or DarkStar (Sun) or similar technologies. Other areas of expertise desired would include: Flash Video, Sound, Animation, Filters, Blend Modes, FlashType, AS3 Socket, ByteArray, Display List API, Event Handling, etc. as well as open-source technologies such as PaperVision 3D (or ability to get up to speed quickly). We expect all of our developers to be heavily into games and to be familiar with a broad range of current and retro game mechanics.

Required Skills:
-Rapid prototypes & wireframes from game design docs, or even high level brainstorm meetings
-Object Oriented Programming (AS2 and/or AS3)
-Design Patterns
-An eye toward Quality User Experience, Fun-Factor, and Great Viral Features
-Work tightly with cross functional team with both local and remote members.
-Understand implement and extend game designs.
-Manage and debug data flow from server to game client (via PHP, Javascript connections, and Web Services)
-XML Skills

Sr. programmers will be expected to document project requirements to task and durations, even analyze detailed problems and implement creative solutions. At times you will need to translate business requirements into system specifications and communicate solutions with partners. We appreciate ability to work with less experienced programmers and coach them so they can likewise grow in their skills and proficiencies (cross-training is a big part of our culture). They should also be leaders in problem solving in all areas of multimedia solutions, and excellent in communication skills in all areas of progress / task reporting.

Most of our games involve ambitious mechanics that call for strong math skills, physics, and familarity with 3D engine rendering techniques. Flash has so many ways to optimize with various industry techniques and workarounds that allow the game to perform well even on lower end machines... if you’ve worked through these aspects as well, you will be ideally suited for what we’re looking to build.
