Local Video Game Companies – Boston

The Boston area has a healthy collection of video game developers, including both AAA and indie studios.  Boston also has one of the best mixes of investors and universities outside of the Bay Area, which helps fuel the growth of game development in the region.

Thanks to Boston Post MortemGameDevMap, Linkedin, Wikipedia, loads of studio pages

    Removed Zynga Boston.

    Removed ImaginEngine.

Subatomic studios has grown to the 11 – 50 range.

Quickhit is no longer with us

  • http://www.gamejobhunter.com/ Paul Teall

Thanks for sharing. Quickhit has been deleted.

  • http://www.gamejobhunter.com/ Paul Teall

Is Subatomic still around? I can’t get their page to load.

Removed Mocospace and added GSN Games.

How does someone like me pitch a video game that I have created to a company to develope?

  • http://www.gamejobhunter.com/ Paul Teall

Late, but confirmed that they are indeed still open, and in the 11-50 range. Belated thanks, Chris!

  • http://www.gamejobhunter.com/ Paul Teall

A finished game, or an idea? If it’s an idea, you probably aren’t going to find any studios looking for pitches. You could contract the work out to individuals or a team.

Updated the headcount info for Harmonix – moved them down to the 51-200 category.

  • Chris Canfield

Also Tencent Boston renamed themselves to Stomp Games, then closed.

  • http://www.gamejobhunter.com/ Paul Teall

Hey Chris – have you found any links confirming? I was only able to find one story, and they don’t sound entirely confident.

It does look like their Facebook page has been abandoned.

  • Chris Canfield

I had friends working there when they shut down the Boston office last summer. It was a bit lost amidst a wave of other layoffs and the Marathon Bombing stories. The last update of their Facebook page under the Stomp Games name is a bit more definitive. https://www.facebook.com/StompGames. They were pulled from the Boston Postmortem listing around that time.

  • http://www.gamejobhunter.com/ Paul Teall

Thanks for the update, Chris. Just removed them from the list.

    Added Proletariat to the list.

  • SlickBrickz

I’ve been wondering the same thing. I have completely written and completed close to 30 games all with stories, characters, levels, script, pretty much everything that makes a game but I cant find a way to pitch them to anyone.

  • Rhonda Bowlin

Should Irrational really still be on here in its current state? Certainly not in the 51-200 range anymore at the very least.

  • http://www.gamejobhunter.com/ Paul Teall

Whoops, not sure how we forgot to remove them! Thanks for the catch, Rhonda.

  • Rhonda Bowlin

Turbine also got it pretty rough with (massive?) layoffs in fall 2014. Not sure what they’re looking like these days.

  • Chris Canfield

From friends working there, Turbine remains in the 300 range.

  • Jesse

Hey, mind adding Gorilla Tactics out of Amherst, MA? 1-10 employees. PC and Mobile contract developers. http://www.gorillatactics.com

  • http://www.gamejobhunter.com/ Paul Teall

    Added!

    Any Internships :'(
Don’t mind my name, I just like digimon alot….

  • Zanfire

I know turbine had a few on bostonpostmortem. Ive applied to at least a dozen or more QA game testing jobs since i moved to boston and not a peep (its been almost 5 months now) and at least twice as many low end QA jobs. It’s rough out here. Sometimes i wish i lived in CA where i seem them up all the time.

  • MetalRizeAwesomeOnmipenismon

Yeah, It really sucks when all my friends have these jobs and internships that are related to their jobs and I’m still working at Restaurants.

I found an Internship position at GSN Games (Production Internship) and as you said I have received nothing in return. Ah well I’ll just focus more on my studies and improve my art. After college I’ll move out west and try to get my feet wet. I’d rather gain work experience while i’m college but…..
