Layoffs at Telltale

Sad news out of San Rafael this morning – the team behind episodic titles like The Wolf Among Us and Minecraft:  Story Mode has cut staff and laid off 90 people. We spotted the story on gamesindustry.biz, but it’s all over the place.

I won’t rehash the quotes that are covered in all the other outlets, but I did find this particular line interesting. Telltale noted that the team will be moving to tools that are “”more proven technologies that will fast-track innovation in its core products as it works with new partners to bring its games to new audiences.” I have no insight into what their internal tool stack looked like, but that sure makes it sound like they were using some unique tools that required more people in certain roles. It’s an interesting thing to tie together with an announcement about eliminating 90 jobs. I haven’t seen any word yet on what new technologies the studio will be using.

The Twitter reaction has been swift, and the game dev community has sprung into action to help spread the word about other openings to those affected by the layoff. The hashtag #telltalejobs is seeing a lot of action, so follow along with that if you’re looking to discover some new listings.
